ATWATER -- The Turlock girls golf team kept their stranglehold on the Central California Conference title.
Hannah Gong won the individual conference championship with a round of 80 and the Bulldogs wrapped up the team championship with a score of 439 to win the Central California Conference Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Rancho Del Rey Golf Course.
Merced finished second with a score of 466.
The Bears came into the tournament needing to finish one spot higher than Turlock to earn a share of the title.
Theyre tough to beat, Merced coach Scott Winton said. We had to have five girls really play their best. Thats tough to do in golf, to have five or six players have their career days at the same time. Its tough to compete with Turlocks depth.
Turlock players recorded five of the top eight scores on Tuesday.
Merced senior Serina Castillo seems to be getting hot at the right time again.
Castillo posted the second lowest score of the tournament with a round of 85.
Castillo was challenging Gong for the individual title before shooting six-over on holes 16 and 17.
Castillo was able to bounce back and record a par on 18.
Shes peaking at the right time, Winton said. She did the same thing last year. I think her last three rounds last year are 85, 83 and 82.
Turlocks Kelsi Valenzuela 87 was good for third place. Pitmans Taylor Beckwith (88) and Buhach Colonys Heather Parker (89) rounded out the top five.
Marissa Castillo (91) and Netanya Hernandez (94) helped the Bears finish in second place.
Both Turlock and Merced will advance to next weeks Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 North Tournament in Lodi at Lockford Springs.
The two teams will be joined by the top six players from the other four teams. Those players will be determined at tonights all-league meeting.
