-- Modesto police detectives will not release the name of a teenager who was shot to death over the weekend because of fear for his family's safety.

The 15-year-old Modesto resident and a second victim were in front of a home in the 2100 block of Conant Avenue on Sunday night when they were confronted by a group.

At least one person from the group fired several rounds. Investigators do not know if the group arrived on foot or was in a vehicle.

They also don't know if any words were exchanged between the group and the two victims prior to the shooting, said Modesto police spokesman Lt. Rick Armendariz.

An ambulance took the 15-year-old to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The second shooting victim, a 23-year-old who was not at the scene when police arrived, was driven to the hospital.

He suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and has been released from the hospital, Armendariz said.

He is cooperating with police.

Armendariz said that because investigators have not established a motive for the shooting and have no one in custody, they are concerned that releasing the teenager's name will jeopardize the safety of his family.
