MODESTO -- Investigators are seeking any tips they can get in a double shooting Sunday night that left a teenager dead and a man wounded.
According to Modesto police, officers were called to the 2100 block of Conant Avenue at 10:45 p.m. They found the teenage boy in the front yard of a home; he was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
While officers were at the hospital, the second shooting victim arrived. The man suffered a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening; he was hospitalized in stable condition Monday.
It was not clear Monday whether that man was able or willing to talk with detectives.
Monday afternoon, a group of women at the home declined to comment, but said the young man who died was 14 years old.
Police said their investigation indicates the two victims were together in front of a house when a group of suspects confronted them. At least one person from the group fired several rounds. Investigators have not established if the suspects arrived on foot or were in a vehicle.
Monday morning, evidence stickers marked eight bullet holes in the garage door and fence of the home, which is across the street from the back of a car dealership, about a block from Sisk Road.
A neighbor said he heard as many as 30 gunshots.
"I'm a Vietnam veteran, and it sounded like a firefight to me," said the neighbor, who didn't want his name published.
He described the home as a popular hangout for young people and said that he's found condoms, broken bottles and beer cans in his yard.
An autopsy was scheduled for Monday afternoon, Modesto Police Lt. Rick Armendariz said in an e-mail. "We have limited investigative leads and no one in custody."
