Time to recycle old phone books in Modesto

New phone books are arriving in Modesto. Residents and businesses can go green and recycle old phone books by placing them in the residential green "organic" waste cans or in the specially marked collection bin downtown on 11th Street between J and K streets, available through Oct. 30. Recycling telephone books into new ones helps save resources.

For every 500 phone books recycled, the following resources are saved:

• 7,000 gallons of water

• 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space

• 17 to 31 trees

• 4,100 kilowatts of electricity, enough to power an average home for six months
