One way to fight gas prices is to take Amtrak.
My girlfriend and I took the opportunity Saturday afternoon and traveled on Amtrak from Modesto to Sacramento. For less than the cost of gas and taking the same amount of time, what a wonderful trip to go see Old Town Sacramento. We couldn't get over how easy it was to prepay our ticket over the Internet, seeing the new, clean stations and the comfortable seating (some with tables).
I highly recommend people take advantage of public transportation. It's better than you may think.
