The Modesto Junior College Speech & Debate Team recently competed at its first speech tournament of the season.
On Sept. 28-30, 15 students traveled to California State University, San Francisco, to compete in five of 14 events. The team came in second overall out of 26 two- and four-year colleges and universities from around Northern and Southern California, as well as Nevada and Texas.
Twelve of the 15 students brought home awards, and several of those students brought home multiple awards.
Emily Akers, a graduate of Escalon High, brought home first place in After Dinner Speaking and was an Octofinalist in Novice Parliamentary Debate with her partner Montana Webb, an Enochs High graduate. Also taking first place honors were Jacob Macdonald, an Oakdale Charter student, in Novice Extemporaneous Speaking, and Kelly Gay Cearley, graduate of Modesto High, in Novice Impromptu.
Taking multiple Awards were Nickolas Brummel, Ryan Reid, Daniel Enas, Jacob Holleman and Jade Ollivierre.
Other award-winners were Alyse Klapperich, Seth Mitchel Bassett and Jacob Morrow.
