MODESTO -- Local groups have raised two-thirds of the $120,000 needed to paint and repair the Modesto arch, establish a maintenance fund and hold a centennial celebration Oct. 26, officials said.
City Manager Greg Nyhoff is proposing to take $40,000 from the city's general fund reserves to ensure the restoration work is finished in three weeks. Community fundraising will continue.
The City Council will consider Nyhoff's proposal Tuesday. City leaders also could sock away $20,000 for future maintenance of the arch in the 2013-14 budget. The council will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the basement chamber of Tenth Street Place, at 1010 10th St.
