No one could keep pace with the Mother Lode League’s win total during the preseason, with three foothill schools going unbeaten and a fourth earning four wins in five football games.
Those days of everyone winning on Fridays have come to an end, though.
The MLL opened play and the first victim was Amador, no longer unbeaten after a 27-20 loss at Calaveras. With unbeaten Argonaut and Summerville winning, however, the league has four teams with five wins.
Calaveras (5-1, 1-0), No.7 in The Bee’s small-school rankings, got a battle from the upstart Buffaloes. Amador, which has struggled much of the last decade, led 20-19 at half behind Jacob Griffin (70 yards, two TD runs). …
It was much easier for Summerville (6-0, 1-0), which rolled past Bret Harte 35-6. The Bears’ Jesse Roberson threw a 60-yard TD on the first play of the game, and their defense generated two turnovers and forced a bad punt snap to set up three more TDs. …
No. 4 small-school Argonaut (6-0, 1-0) established itself as the team to beat with a 41-3 thrashing of Linden. The Lions had no answer for Ray King, who ran for 108 yards, caught four balls for 67 and scored three TDs. The Mustangs also displayed their usually low-key passing attack, as Brock Hayes was 10 of 11 for 122 yards with a pair of TD tosses. …
The ranks of the unbeaten will be sliced to one next week, because Argonaut visits Summerville. Calaveras is at Linden (2-4, 0-1) and Amador (5-1, 0-1) tries to get back on the winning track vs. Bret Harte (1-5, 0-1).
Six wins, with at least two in league, is enough to assure a team a trip to the playoffs. Five wins, that’s a more precarious position to be in.
