-- A man died after being struck by a Modesto City Schools bus on Orangeburg Avenue on Thursday afternoon.

The accident occurred about 2 p.m. in the 2000 block of East Orangeburg, near Oakdale Road. When Modesto police officers arrived, they found an adult male severely injured after being hit by the bus.

The only person in the bus at the time of the collision was the female driver. There were no students on board because it was a minimum day for Modesto City Schools.

Preliminary investigation suggests the school bus was traveling easton Orangeburg when it struck the man, who was in the roadway and not in a crosswalk.

The man, believed to be in his late 40s, was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. The man's identity is being withheld until the Stanislaus County coroner's office has confirmed his identity and his family has been notified. Police do not believe drugs, alcohol or speed were factors in the accident.

A witness reported that the man jumped in front of the bus with his hands up, but Modesto police could not confirm the report.

Police ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call traffic officer Scott Nelson at (209) 652-2160.
