Expand, rename the bridge

While I applaud the retrofit work on the bridge at Hatch and Carpenter roads (Sept. 21, Page A-1), I think it would be wiser money spent to expand the bridge to four lanes now, rather than at some time in the future.

The planners have spoken of making Carpenter Road a four-lane expressway, and it will bottleneck down at the bridge, causing more backups.

I cannot remember the last time there was any substantial work done on that bridge, and I don't know when we would see it again.

Also, it would be nice to see it named the Curry Crane memorial bridge, to honor Curry, who lost his life on that bridge over 20 years ago. Modesto High School Class of '81.
