The U.S. court ruling upholding the block on graphic cigarette warnings represents a setback for informing the public of the dangers of tobacco products.

Graphic label warnings are necessary and are not a scare tactic. Consumers need to understand the health risks associated with smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke.

Many tobacco users fail to appreciate the extent of the health risks associated with tobacco use and, in fact, greatly underestimate their personal risk and the risk of their loved ones.

Additionally, warning labels have not been changed for 25 years. It is time for a change and to let the truth come out. The truth is that tobacco products are dangerous and are responsible for more than 443,000 deaths in the United States yearly.
