-- The Stanislaus County sheriff's bomb squad on Saturday night was investigating a suspicious device that appeared to be a pipe bomb found near Argus High School in Ceres.

About 5:50 p.m., Ceres police responded to an area near Ninth and Lawrence streets, where the device was found. City workers placed barricades to block traffic.

Authorities were still at the scene as of 8 p.m., but it appeared nearby residents had not been evacuated from their homes. Firefighters and medics were at the scene as a precaution. No further information was available.
