Drunken Oakdale man hit, killed by van while crossing street

OAKDALE -- A 61-year-old man was struck by a car and killed Wednesday night while crossing a street in Oakdale.

About 7:45 p.m., the Oakdale man walked south across Highway 108 at Wood Avenue. He crossed the westbound lane and, when he entered the eastbound lane, was hit by a Honda minivan driven by Marilyn Drendel, 72, of Oakdale, said Oakdale police officer Ben Savage.

There is no crosswalk at the intersection.

The pedestrian was taken by ambulance to Oak Valley Hospital, where he died a short time later. His identity is being withheld by police until his family has been notified.

Savage said the investigation is ongoing and fault has not yet been determined. He said the 61-year-old man was under the influence of alcohol when he was hit.

Drendel and her passenger were not injured.
