I am saddened by the news that the Townsend Opera Players will discontinue the Cameratini.

My daughter participated in the Cameratini, the Camerateens and the Camerata while she sang with TOP. She received invaluable training and experience in voice, theater arts, stage presence and acting. Because of TOP, she was able to participate in the San Francisco Opera Summer Training, school musicals and college shows.

Many others who started in the Cameratini have gone on to become professional opera singers from those humble beginnings at TOP. Besides this training, she was also privileged to listen and learn from both community and professional artists. This fostered a love for the arts and opera. I think TOP is overlooking one of the most important assets they have — the children!

Developing a love for the arts is something our schools cannot provide in this way. If children don't learn the love of opera when they are young, we will lose this art form. That was Buck Townsend's vision! Five thousand dollars is a small price to pay for this beneficial program. How about a benefactor or community presentation to raise money for the Cameratini?
