TURLOCK -- Good defense by Cal Poly Pomona stifled Cal State Stanislaus and sent the Warriors to a straight-sets volleyball loss Saturday night.
The Warriors, one night after their home-opening win over Humboldt State, were beaten 25-17, 25-15 and 25-18 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action at Fitzpatrick Arena.
Pomona (6-4, 2-1) recorded 51 digs, 20 alone during the second set. Stanislaus (4-6, 1-1) was led by Andrea Fett with 13 kills. She swung 35 times with only four errors and also had six digs.
Melissa Bishop added six kills. Ashley Pitman recorded 10 digs.
Water Polo
JOHANSEN TAKES THIRD Grant Plunkett led Johansen High to an impressive third-place finish at the Central California Championships in Merced. Plunkett totaled eight goals in three games for the Vikings (12-2), four of them during their 10-6 victory over Golden Valley in the third-place game. Corey Plaster also had four goals.
Johansen reached the semifinals with a dramatic 3-2 win in sudden death over Ripon. All three goals were scored by Plunkett. The Vikings were beaten by Lodi in the semifinal 10-4.
MJC MEN WIN Modesto Junior College wrapped up the Delta Tournament with a pair of wins 17-6 over De Anza and 15-10 over Merced. The Pirates improved to 7-3.
MJC WOMEN FALL The Pirates fell to 1-6 after they were beaten 12-11 by West Valley and 16-1 to Foothill at the West Valley Tournament.
