Entrance to the festival is free; there are fees for food and games.

Disaster training at church

Modesto's Church of the Brethren will hav a training workshop Oct. 5-6 for its denomination's Children's Disaster Services.

Since 1980, the program has run child care centers in disaster areas in cooperation with FEMA and the American Red Cross. Volunteers provide a reassuring environment for children after a disaster strikes, which allows parents to complete the FEMA process.

The volunteer training is open to anyone older than 18. After the training, volunteers go through a background check before they are sent to a disaster site.

Volunteers have been sent to Southern California after wildfires, to Houston, Texas, after a hurricane and to other sites, said Luella Cole, a church member and volunteer.

The overnight training runs from 5 p.m. Oct. 5 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at the church, 2301 Woodland Ave. The cost is $55, and reservations are required. Call (209) 524-8507.
