-- Merced College got the penetration it was looking for. A pair of Blue Devils surged into the Fresno City backfield, getting a piece of running back Robert Johnson.

Unfortunately for MC, that was all they got, as Johnson found a crease in the defense and somehow managed to stretch the ball across the goal line on fourth down with a minute to play to give the Rams a 38-28 victory Saturday night at Stadium '76.

The Blue Devils took a 38-28 lead into the fourth quarter, but had the game flipped on its head in a 15-second span.

After sitting out the third quarter, Mike Baker returned to lead the Rams' fourth-quarter charge. He connected with Larry Overstreet on a 31-yard touchdown pass to trim the Blue Devils' lead to 38-34 with 7 minutes, 52 seconds to play.

The Fresno City defense came up big on MC's next play from scrimmage, sacking quarterback Trevor Mew at the Blue Devil 18-yard line. Mew lost the football and FCC (2-0) recovered.

Johnson then wasted no time, giving Fresno the lead back with an 18-yard touchdown run one play later.

STANISLAUS VOLLEYBALL, at Rohnert Park — Trailing two sets to one, the Warriors rallied to win the final two games for a 15-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 15-12 victory over Dominican in a morning match at the Seawolf Spike tournament hosted by Sonoma State. In the afternoon showdown against Seattle Pacific, the Warriors lost 17-25, 25-13, 25-15, 25-23.

MJC MEN'S SOCCER, at Salinas — Thanks to seven saves from goalkeeper Alonso Lara, the Pirates (2-1-1) played defending state finalist Hartnell (1-0-3) to a scoreless draw. MJC returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Contra Costa.
