-- A man was struck and killed by a car while riding his bicycle Friday morning in southeast Modesto.

The collision happened about 8:30 a.m. when a 46-year-old woman driving a BMW north on Phoenix Avenue hit the bicyclist, who was riding east on Miller Avenue, said Modesto police Sgt. Brian Findlen.

Witnesses said neither party stopped at stop signs at the four-way controlled intersection, which is a block north of Yosemite Boulevard.

The driver of the BMW stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, Findlen said.

The 50-year-old bicyclist, a Modesto resident, suffered major head trauma. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. His identity was being withheld pending notification of family.

Officers are investigating whether either the driver or the bicyclist was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drug paraphernalia was found on the man's bicycle, Findlen said.
