The mother of a 17-month-old child who died in a car wreck near Waterford on Monday also has died.

Tiffany Laney, 22, was driving with her daughter and boyfriend to Turlock Lake about 12:30 p.m. when she lost control of the Honda Civic she was driving on Lake Road east of Hawkins Road.

At a speed of 50 mph to 60 mph, the Honda hit a Turlock Irrigation District embankment, authorities said. The car flipped, rolled into the canal and became submerged.

Laney and her 17-month-old daughter, ZaLexxia Laney-Thomas, were pulled out of the water, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was being performed by bystanders when rescue personnel reached the scene. ZaLexxia was pronounced dead when she arrived at Oak Valley Hospital in Oakdale. Laney died a short time later at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. Laney’s boyfriend, Paul Seutter, 22, of Modesto, suffered moderate injuries and was flown by helicopter to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.

The family of the deceased has set up a memorial fund at Westamerica Bank, 1003 12th St., Modesto. Checks can be made out to the “memorial fund for Tiffany Laney and ZaLexxia Laney-Thomas” in care of Donna Tamayo or Courtney Turner. Funeral arrangements are pending.
