— A fatal shooting here early Monday may have occurred during an attempted break-in.

Stanislaus County sheriff's deputies responded to the 1400 block of Shearwater Drive just after 1 a.m. after a report of a shooting. They found a man in the driveway of one home; a blood trail led to the house next door.

The man, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said detectives were interviewing witnesses and working on the crime scene. Monday morning, technicians and investigators gathered evidence from the home and property.

A neighbor said a teenager inside the home shot the man as he was trying to break into the house.

The neighbor, who did not want his name published, said earlier Sunday night, three men had been seen getting out of a truck and looking in the windows of the home. Another neighbor called police, who took a report but the men were gone by the time officers arrived.

"Several hours later, someone came back and broke the front window in an attempt to get in," the neighbor said. The teenager in the house had armed himself with a pistol and shot the man, he said.

Bejaran said he could not confirm the neighbor's account.

The home is just a few houses away from where deputies raided a marijuana growing operation a couple of weeks ago; Bejaran said there is no indication that the two incidents are related.

This is the second shooting in the city limit this year; a young man was shot in a park Jan. 4. Last month, two men were found shot to death in Del Puerto Canyon south of town.
