My husband and I have enjoyed the finished section of the Virginia Corridor for several months. It's truly a gem for Modesto and its citizens. Can't wait until the rest is finished.

We generally walk in the early morning around commute time, so it is quite busy at the crossing areas for pedestrians. We have noticed quite a few near disasters, especially the Orangeburg Avenue crossing. We have witnessed drivers not stopping for pedestrians even when the flashing safety lights are engaged.

This morning was the worst. A pedestrian was halfway across Orangeburg when the driver of a white SUV slammed on her brakes and came within inches of the walker. The driver was on her cell phone!

Please everyone, wake up, get off your phones and pay attention! As for pedestrians, bikers, runners and all who use the trail, be careful, even if you have the right of way and the safety lights. Assume the drivers aren't going to stop.

BEVERLY BARBER
