Success & Service: Modesto's Memorial gets Aetna quality surgery honor

Modesto's Memorial Medical Center received designation as an Aetna Institute of Quality bariatric surgery facility. It's the third time Memorial has received an Aetna quality distinction. In November 2011, the hospital was recognized for cardiovascular surgery and for cardiac intervention programs.

Ceres' Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10293 and its Ladies Auxiliary received the VFW's outstanding national community service post award during the organization's annual convention in Reno last month. The Ceres post was among the 68 posts honored nationally for community service. Combined, the posts volunteered 8.5 million hours of service valued at more than $236 million.

The National Association of Enrolled Agents has honored Turlock businesswoman Kathy Rocha with the 2012 Excellence in Public Awareness Award in recognition of her contribution to "making enrolled agents more recognizable as the tax professionals of choice."

Enrolled agents are federally licensed tax practitioners who may represent clients before the Internal Revenue Service. Six winners nationwide were announced Aug. 7 during the annual awards ceremony in Las Vegas.

The Lt. Col Arthur King Composite Squadron 50, Civil Air Patrol, will present a certificate of appreciation to Modesto Mayor Garrad Marsh on Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m. in the council chamber at Tenth Street Place. The honor recognizes assistance to the local squadron.

The squadron also will hold an open house Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Monaco Hangar-Museum, 833 Airport Way. The event will include a demonstration of training in aerospace education, emergency services and cadet programs.

A Tracy couple are enjoying the road in a 2012 45th Anniversary Edition Camaro they picked up Thursday from American Chevrolet in Modesto. Richard and Peggy Beck won the car as part of Save Mart Supermarkets' Hot August Nights online promotion. Richard Beck was one of five contestants who drew a key from a hat on stage at the Grand Sierra Hotel in Reno on Aug. 11; his was a fit for the new car.

Gov. Jerry Brown appointed Deborah Brown, 55, of Ahwahnee to the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Deborah Brown, a Republican, has been a teacher for the Yosemite Unified School District since 1994. This position requires Senate confirmation. The compensation is $100 per diem.
