Record at school: 26-13
Last year: Calaveras (6-5, 4-1) was just 2-4, and coming off a 42-point loss to Argonaut, before winning its final four regular-season games to make the playoffs. The Redskins havent missed the playoffs this century.
Last league title: 2010
Last playoff berth: 2011
Coaching staff: Doug Clark, Scott Anderson, Gil Valtierra, Manny Mossa.
Top returners: QB Zack Johnson, FB/LB Joe Elliott, RB/FS Kellen Hodgson, RB/WR/FS Christian Moore, TE/OLB Brian Golston, WR/CB Mike Seawell, G/DT Michael Coltrin, T/DT Noah Shelgren, FB/LB Danny Gilmore, TE/OLB Morgan Simmons.
Top newcomers: CB/WR TJ Crenshaw (soph.), T/DT Bobby Boitano (jr.), G/DT Cody Durm (jr.), C/DT Derrick Rittenhouse (jr.), TE/LB Blake Ehlers (jr.), G/NG Emmett Barrett (jr.).
Outlook: Johnson (83 of 172, 1,110 yards, 8 TDs, 10 INTs) leads perhaps the districts most talented small-school offense, which includes RB Hodgson (975 yards, 12 TDs), WR Seawell (11 catches, 16-yard avg., 4 TDs) and a nice target in TE Brian Golston (13 catches, 19-yard avg.) The offensive line is being rebuilt, but theres strength coming up with Boitano, Durm, Rittenhouse and the other junior linemen. Calaveras is 55-7in the MLL going back to 2000, an 89 percent success rate.
Key game: Week 6 (Sept. 28) vs. Lodi. This is a big step up for an MLL program, taking on a Division 1 school with a football history the beauty of being Calaveras is that youre never afraid to face anyone, anywhere.
