Coach: Scott Edwards

Career record: 23-38

Record at school: 23-38

Last year: Bret Harte (5-5, 2-3) lost a second-half lead and fell 21-20 to Lowell in last week’s opener, and that game was what kept the Bullfrogs from the playoffs. They lost two other games by a total of five points.

Last league title: 1999

Last playoff berth: 2007

Coaching staff: Eli Dufloth, Jon Bynes, Quinn Whittle, Jerry Rucker, Bob Beeding.

Top returners: QB/DB Chad Testa (5-11, 160), OL/DL Jared Taylor (6-3, 270), OL/DL Jesse Acedo (5-11, 250), OL/DL Rodney Riner (6-3, 230), RB/DL Conor Zumbach (6-3, 190), RB/SS Taylor Westberg (5-8, 150), TE/LB Sean Hale (6-1, 210), TE/LB Johnathan Williams (5-10, 185), OL/DL Pablo Zamudio (5-11, 240), OL/LB John Rohrabaugh (6-0, 180).

Top newcomers: OL/DL Matt McManus (6-1, 230, jr.), RB/DB Pete Conrado (5-8, 140, jr.), RB/SS Colby Westberg (5-8, 150, jr.), WR/DB Jacob Bailer (5-11, 170, jr.), RB/LB Logan Lowe (5-10, 175, soph.).

Outlook: The Frogs need to win on the road this fall, after going 1-4 away from Sutter Creek last season. They get Argonaut, Calaveras and Summerville – the top three contenders in the MLL – at home. … Zumbach (320 yards, 6.2-yard avg., 6 TDs) is a load between the tackles, while Westberg and the JV backs will be prodviding the quickness. … Bret Harte could have one of its largest lines in recent years, so look for Zumbach and his fellow backs to be kept busy.

Key game: Week 6 (Oct. 5) vs. Hughson. After losing to Hughson in OT a year ago, the Bullfrogs have revenge in mind for this one – and a win here should make Bret Harte 3-2 or better going into league.
