Record at school: 8-22
Last year: Delhi (6-4, 4-3) became one of the rare teams to win six games and not reach the playoffs, under the sections current format. Its closest loss was by 19 points, and it gave up an average of 40 points in its defeats.
Last league title: None
Last playoff berth: 2006
Coaching staff: Joe Cantu (Defensive coordinator and asst. head coach), Erik Martinez (Offensive coordinator, QB/RBs), Don Blankenship (OL/DL).
Top returners: RB/LB Joseph Cantu, FB/LB Ryan Saavedra, RB/DB Corey Figueroa, OL/DL Brian Medel, RB/DB Nelson Quinteros, TE/DB Hector Jimenez, RB/DB Eric Velo, OL/DL Erwin Cervantes.
Top newcomers: RB/DB Joel Cantu, RB/LB Reynaldo Medina, FB/DL Alfonso Lomeli.
Outlook: Cantu will be a three-year starter, after averaging 8.6 yards per carry as a junior and 10.8 yards in 2010. Saavedra has added 20 pounds, a combination of a good appetite and work in the weight room, and Figueroa (7.75 yards a carry last year) will be looking to run behind him, as well. Medel provides experience on the offensive line, but plenty of holes to fill. Figueroa will lead the secondary, but much will depend on the Hawks finding a quarterback to run their ground-oriented attack.
Key game: Week (Oct. 19) v s. Mariposa. If the Hawks can successfully run on Mariposa, it likely has a playoff bid coming. A good late-season game that will physically test Delhi.
