Coach: James Peterson

Career record: 15-17

Record at school: 15-17

Last year: Turlock (7-4, 3-2) continued its resurgence, making the playoffs for a second straight year after going 0-10 in 2009. Sophomore QB Sean Downs struggled with his passing consistency and suffered a late-season injury, while the Bulldogs lacked breakaway running threats. Turlock showed improvement late, however, threatening Pitman in Week 10 before falling 16-13.

Last league title: 2003

Last playoff berth: 2011

Coaching staff: Joe Oliveira, Kirk Peterson.

Top returners: S/WR Brandon Esquivel (5-11), S/RB DaShawn Holcombe (6-2), TE/OLB Ryan Mabie (6-2), G/OLB Jacob Rodriguez (6-2), QB Sean Downs (5-10, jr.), RB/CB Jevan Hogan (5-10).

Top newcomers: OL Tyler Murphy (soph.).

Outlook: The Bulldogs return many of their skill players, but they’ll need to find plenty of replacement on the OL – Rodriguez is the lone returner. … Downs (31 of 91, 534 yards, 6 TDs, 6 INTs; 534 yards rushing, 6.2-yard avg., 9 TDs) led Turlock in passing and rushing as a sophomore last fall. He led Turlock past Golden Valley (passing for 116, rushing for 124) to get his team to the playoffs, but a season-ending injury kept him playing in the postseason. … Esquivel and Holcombe are among the best safety tandem in the district, and combined to run for 800 yards and five TDs in 2011. They each picked off two passes, as well.

Key game: Week 1 (Aug. 31) vs. Sonora. Turlock opens at top-ranked Oakdale, but then it has Sonora and will be favored to beat each of its next three foes (Enochs, Modesto and Davis), so a victory here would start the Bulldogs on a four-game winning streak as the prep for conference play. This is a key game for Downs to show he can throw the ball against a talented defense.
