Coach: Maurice Chambers

Career record: 0-0

Record at school: 0-0

Last year: Johansen (5-5, 3-3) struggled at the start and finish, losing its first two and three of its final four. Its timid offense was held to 14 points or less in four losses, and Johansen didn’t beat a team with a winning record.

Last league title: 2008

Last playoff berth: 2008

Top returners: LB/FB Erik Hernandez (6-1, 215), LB/TE Marcus Robinson (6-3, 245), WR/DE Zack Henry (6-1, 210), DT/G Jeremy Uperesa (6-0, 260), G/DT Carlos Devarona (6-0, 245), C/DT Thomas Romero (6-1, 270), RB Tony Black (5-8, 170), RB/S Chris McClure (5-8, 165), QB Isaiah Brooks (6-1, 170)

Top newcomers: FS Isaiah Robinson (6-0, 170, jr.).

Outlook: The Vikings will certainly have a new look this fall – head coach Jason McCoy resigned to take the same job at Gregori and Johansen’s two 1,000-yard rushers graduated – but a large offensive line and a friedndly schedule bodes well. … Gone are McNair and Sonora, replaced by Ceres and Livingston. With six games getting a team into the playoffs, Johansen would have moved on last year if they would have Ceres on the schedule rather than McNair or Sonora. … Robinson could be a terror running routes down the middle if Brooks (348 yards passing, 3 TDs); Few defenders in the secondary can match Robinson’s size.

Key game: Week 5 (Sept. 21) vs. Downey. Johansen softened in early season schedule and should be 3-1 heading into this conference opener, and its running attack is the ideal counter for a high-flying passing attack.
