-- Pieces of Modesto’s iconic arch began to come down, part of a three-month restoration project for the downtown landmark.

I Street was closed for a short time as workers with Collins Electrical Co. began the process of removing the lettering on Saturday morning.

Mingham, who was born and raised in Modesto, said he was proud to be a part of Modesto’s history by helping restore the historic landmark, which turned 100 years old this year.

At least a dozen businesses, including Collins Electrical, are donating time or discounting their rates as part of the effort.

The arch — with its motto “Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health” — will be reinforced, rewired and repainted ... and is set to shine again during a centennial ceremony Oct. 26.
