Now that the most recent civil trial is over, I wanted to share with the community my thoughts on the case and offer an apology for my comments. My thanks to the jury, who worked diligently deliberating the facts. Even though they were deadlocked, they did unanimously find that the county and the Sheriff's Office did not discriminate against anyone.
Lawsuits filed by employees are a direct result of holding them accountable to a higher standard of conduct, behavior and performance; not because we abuse them, harass them or discriminate against them.
That being said, as your sheriff, I, too, am accountable for comments I made out of the frustration of dealing with a complicated workers compensation system. While my comments were never intended to be derogatory or demeaning, I alone am accountable and responsible for those comments and comments made by command staff. For that, I offer my sincerest apologies to those individuals affected and to the community we serve.
