MODESTO — Modesto police on Wednesday identified the man who stabbed a teenager and rammed his SUV into a home before he was shot and killed by two officers.
Randy Lynn Sheffield, 54, armed himself with kitchen knives about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday and went after his estranged girlfriend, who was across the street at a duplex on Gemini Court.
Witnesses said the two had just been involved in an argument and Sheffield threw one of the knives at her. The womans 17-year-old son intervened and was stabbed by Sheffield during a struggle, according to police Lt. Rick Armendariz.
Neighbors called police. Two patrol officers arrived at the scene within minutes and found Sheffield sitting in the drivers seat of a Chevy Tahoe. They ordered Sheffield from the vehicle; instead, he drove toward the home where his girlfriend was on the front porch with her son and several other people.
Sheffield rammed his vehicle into the porch, striking a palm tree and crashing into the front door of the home, injuring an unidentified woman inside the house.
Officers ordered Sheffield to get out of the SUV, but he attempted to flee by placing his Chevy in reverse and accelerating in the direction of an officer and residents, Armendariz said.
Officer John Moss, an 11-year veteran, and Officer Bobby Meredith, an 8-year veteran, shot Sheffield. Despite life-saving efforts, Sheffield died at the scene.
Moss and Meredith were placed on paid administrative leave standard procedure after an officer is involved in a shooting.
The owner of the home Sheffield crashed his SUV into said her friend -- the injured woman -- suffered a broken pelvis and remains hospitalized. She also said the woman is two months pregnant.
The teenage boy was treated and released for his stab wounds.
