Leftover signs in Modesto are eyesore

The one thing I wish people understood about "garage sale" and "yard sale" signs is that when they leave them nailed to stop signs, telephone poles, or whatever they can find after the date of the sale, it leaves the corners of our community looking tacky. They should remove the signs at the end of their sale.

It is a huge eyesore to see these signs, half torn down, weather worn, half ripped off, hanging sideways, from whatever they nailed them to. Sometimes the sales were months ago and no one has bothered to take down the signs. Probably they don't care or are too tired, but it should be their responsibility to remove the posted sale signs.

An idea I had was to charge these owners by going to the address of the sale with the sign and fining them. The city could make some money.

Editor's Note: We doubt most people know that Modesto's sign ordinance limits residents to two garage sale signs per sale, each no larger than three square feet. They may only be put up on the day(s) of the sale and cannot be attached to utility poles, city trees or be placed in the public right of way. The rules are part of Title 10, Article 21 of the municipal code.
