Susan Soltau, a 2009 Modesto High graduate, recently was named a recipient of the Jake and Fran Kirihara Memorial Scholarship Award, presented by the Merced Chapter of The Sierra Club. Susan was one of two UC Merced undergraduates selected by faculty from the EEB (Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) and Earth Systems Science Departments to receive this award.Susan is a biology major with an emphasis in environmental sustainability, and also was named on the Dean's List for the 2012 spring semester.

Modesto's Keelan Tobia, 21, repeated as the snare drum solo champion in the Drum Corps International's I&E competition in San Antonio. The 2009 Enochs High grad is studying graphic design at MJC and plays with Concord's Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps. He competes in the world championships Aug. 11 in Indianapolis.
