July 25, 2012

5:30 p.m. UPDATE:

The two dead following a Hughson standoff are men, Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department deputy Royjinder Singh said Thursday afternoon. A woman escaped the house when an armed man entered about 2 p.m.

5:05 p.m. UPDATE: Two people are dead after a standoff in Hughson that lasted nearly three hours, Stanislaus County sheriff's officials confirmed this afternoon.

Deputy Royjinder Singh said those dead are a woman and a man, both of gunshot wounds. They were found inside a house in the 1900 block of Seventh Street by members of the sheriff's SWAT team.

Singh said a man escaped the house when an armed man entered about 2 p.m.

The identities of those killed were not released.

4:50 p.m. UPDATE:

Between 4 and 4:30 p.m., the standoff apparently came to an end. A civic official at the scene, who spoke on the condition he not be identified, made the cryptic comment, "What's happened is done, and it's not pretty." There was no official word yet, though, on how the standoff included and whether anyone in the Seventh Street house was injured or killed.

Several agencies had responded to the scene, including the Sheriff's Department, Hughson police, parole officers and the California Highway Patrol. SWAT officers and ambulances were leaving the scene.

3:10 p.m. UPDATE:

Sheriff's Department deputy Royjinder Singh said the incident began with a report of a suicidal man in the Eaton Road area in Oakdale. Deputies encountered a man armed with a handgun and driving a Dodge pickup. He drove to Albers Road, with law enforcement following in a moderate-speed pursuit. The several-mile pursuit ended when the pickup driver pulled into the driveway of a house on the west side of Seventh Street in Hughson, got out of his vehicle and ran into the house.

Law enforcement believes the man may have a connection to the home -- perhaps residing there or having family there -- but hasn't confirmed that. One gunshot, followed by several more, were heard from inside the home. No injuried have been confirmed, but there's been no contact with anyone in the house, Singh said.

There are a few residential trailers on the property, but it's unknown whether they are inhabited. Immediately adjacent homes have been evacuated.

Traffic into the area has been halted at Seventh Street and Fox Road, location of St. Mary's Apostolic Catholic Church of the East.

2:40 p.m. UPDATE:

The Sheriff's Department has a helicopter on the scene in addition to officers and vehicles on the ground. The Church of Latter-day Saints at 1930 Seventh Street is being evacuated. The Sheriff's Department has set up a command post at Seventh Street and Fox Road.

2:14 p.m.

Law enforcement officers are involved in a standoff at a home in the 1800 block of Seventh Street in Hughson.

The incident began as a pursuit, said Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department deputy Royjinder Singh.

The man being pursued fled into a house, is armed and has fired shots, Singh said.

Communication over a scanner indicates the home is not the man's, and there are people inside, including one disabled person.

We'll have more information as it becomes available.
