MODESTO -- A man stabbed multiple times at his central Modesto home made it to his next-door neighbor's house before collapsing Friday afternoon.
Efforts to revive the man, described as white and in his 30s, were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at a local hospital, Modesto police said.
Police Lt. Rick Armendariz said a second man was detained after the stabbing, which occurred shortly before 4 p.m. in the 1400 block of Teresa Street. The men's names were not released.
Neighbors came out of their homes as sirens wailed in the tree-shaded, older neighborhood near Modesto Junior College. Residents of Pearl Street, one block over, said they saw a barefoot man, covered in blood and wearing only pajama bottoms, run out of the alley behind the house.
A group of passing bicyclists quickly surrounded him and called police, who took the man into custody, said the residents, who declined to give their names.
On Teresa Street, neighbors said the man who died "was a good guy," very quiet and helpful. They said he took care of his disabled father at the home until earlier this year.
Aaron Goodman said his next-door neighbor crawled to his house and collapsed on his front porch, bleeding from multiple stab wounds to his chest and back.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators were processing the scene and interviewing witnesses to determine what led to the stabbing.
