-- The 24-year-old driver of a bread van who was shot Tuesday night in west Modesto has been released from the hospital, authorities said.

The man was near his Panaderia American Bakery van, which was parked in the 1200 block of Marseille Lane, off Robertson Road, when he was approached by an Asian man, according to Modesto police Lt. Rick Armendariz.

The man began assaulting the driver. Soon, a three or four Latino men joined in the attack, during which the Asian man pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the chest, the lieutenant said.

The victim suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, and he was released from a hospital Wednesday.

Armendariz said detectives do not know what motivated the assault or why the other men joined in.
