Michael Taylor, who played for Beyer High and spent the last two years at outside linebacker at Modesto JC, signed a letter of intent and will play for Cal Lutheran this fall. "I think they like his instincts," MJC coach Sam Young said. "Things you can't coach, how to respond in a certain situation, Mike just reacts to it." The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder has two years of eligibility for Cal Lutheran, which was 8-2 last fall.
PASSING JAMBOREE AT MJC SATURDAY: Ten Stanislaus District football teams are in the 7-on-7 Modesto JC Passing Jamboree on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the football and baseball stadiums on the MJC campus, 435 College Ave. The championship game starts about 1 p.m.
THREE NAMED TO UNDERCLASS TEAM: Johansen High's Gabrielle Maurice, recently named the State Junior of the Year, Sierra's Allison Walljasper and Hughson's Katelyn Harden have been selected to the CalHiSports All-State Underclass Team.
Maurice, a shortstop and The Bee's Player of the Year the last two seasons, has a verbal commitment to UCLA. Walljasper, a sophomore pitcher with a verbal to LSU, led her team to the section final and Harden is a junior pitcher who guided the Huskies to the No. 2 spot in the state Division 4 rankings.
YOUTH GOLFERS AT PEBBLE TODAY: Modesto's Laura Arellano and Ceres' Anthony Bonales, both members of The First Tee of Central Valley, begin play today in the Nature Valley First Tee Open, a Champions Tour event at Pebble Beach and Del Monte.
Arellano, paired with professional Kirk Triplett, starts at Pebble Beach's 10th tee at 12:44 p.m. Bonales, whose pro is Jim Gallagher Jr., begins at Del Monte's first tee at 9:09 a.m. Also in Bonales' foursome is Nathaniel Crosby, the former U.S. Amateur champion and the son of the late entertainment icon Bing Crosby. RIPON'S BONNER WINS AGAIN: Andrew Bonner of Ripon birdied the last five holes at Rancho Canada's West course Thursday to win the JGANC/NCGA Northern California Players Championship.
Bonner, who won the Bumgardner Junior Memorial title earlier this week, annexed his fourth junior victory of the summer by totaling 86 points in Stableford scoring to overtake runner-up Jacob Solomon of Dublin.
Mabel Wong of Oakdale finished fifth in the 15-17 girls division, and Modesto's Christopher Ebster lost in a playoff in the 12-13 boys flight.
