'Anything Goes'

Broadway veteran and Oakdale native Colleen Hawks-Pierce stars in Modesto Performing Arts' musical production of "Anything Goes." The show centers on wild antics on an ocean liner traveling from New York to London. Cole Porter wrote the score, which includes such hits as "It's DeLovely," "I Get a Kick Out of You," "You're the Top," "Blow, Gabriel Blow" and the title song. Hawks-Pierce plays Reno Sweeney, an evangelist turned nightclub singer. The show kicks off Modesto Performing Arts' 45th summer season.

Four-time Grammy Award winner k.d. lang, with honors in pop and country, performs with her band the Siss Boom Bang. Lang is known for her early 1990s hits "Constant Craving" and "Miss Chatelaine" and for her collaborations with Roy Orbison and Tony Bennett. She is promoting her latest album, the country CD "Sing it Loud." Los Angeles folk duo the Milk Carton Kids opens.

Sample premium wine, beer and food from local restaurants at the second annual Night at the Bowl tonight at Graceada Park in Modesto. The event features performances by the Gottschalk Concert Band, Gottschalk's Little Big Band and the Highway 99 Band. It's a fund-raiser for the city's parks and recreation department and for MoBand.

Hilmar's homage to the bovine returns this weekend with the Hilmar Dairy Festival, featuring fireworks as a prelude to July 4th festivities. Also on the schedule are a Little Milkman and Milkmaid Contest, tractor and trailer parade, classic rock performance by Threshold, craft booths, free milk, free Hilmar cheese samples and more.

'Red'

The Tony Award-winning play "Red," the story of real-life expressionist painter Mark Rothko, begins a monthlong run today at Stage 3 Theatre in Sonora. In the play, Rothko, a brilliant, volatile artist, has received the biggest commission since the Sistine Chapel and has shut himself off from the outside world to create it. What follows is a duel not only with his inner angels and demons, but with his young assistant. The play contains some adult language.
