— A 68-year-old man died Friday evening after being pulled from Lake Yosemite, the victim of an apparent drowning, Merced County sheriff's deputies reported Sunday.

How the man ended up in the water is under investigation, and deputies did not release the man's name. Deputies, paramedics and University of California at Merced police were called to the scene about 8 p.m.

By the time emergency personnel arrived, bystanders had pulled the man from the water, according to deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman. The man was seen floating in a canal that leads toward the campus.

The man was taken to Mercy Medical Center Merced with a pulse, although he wasn't breathing. He was pronounced dead later Friday.
