Modesto council meets on budget

MODESTO -- The Modesto City Council will have a closed-door meeting starting at 3 p.m. Monday to discuss negotiations with the six unions representing city employees.

The council is seeking concessions from employees to help eliminate a $3.8 million general fund shortfall and reduce the cost of retirement benefits. The labor talks will continue when the council meets behind closed doors before its regular meeting Tuesday.
