Papa John's Pizza is coming to Modesto.
The national pizza chain never has had a restaurant in Stanislaus County despite having more than 3,500 restaurants in all 50 states and 29 countries.
But Modesto brothers John and Bobby Ismail are about to change that. The duo has exclusive franchising rights for the company in the county, and plans to open three restaurants by spring.
The first will open in early August in Modesto at Standiford Avenue and Tully Road.
"I tried their pizza several different times and it was very good," said restaurateur John Ismail, who owns Uno's Chicago Grill in Modesto. "We didn't have one around. So I researched it and found it was an open territory."
The chain will open in the space of the former TCBY on Standiford. There is no sit-down dining, but delivery within about a 6-mile radius, as well as pickup, will be available.
Customers will be able to order by phone or online.
John Ismail said the restaurant will hire about 45 employees.
The brothers will begin accepting applications and doing on-site interviews the week of July 16.
They plan to open two more Papa John's in the county within 10 months.
The first will open about December on Geer Road in Turlock. They're searching for a location along Oakdale Road for a second Modesto spot to make its debut about April.
Despite owning a pizza-based franchise in Uno's, John Ismail said the restaurants cater to different markets.
He said he's excited to bring the company's slogan of "Better ingredients. Better pizza." to the area.
