-- Turlock police responded to a burglary in progress over the weekend at the home where former California State University, Stanislaus, President Hamid Shirvani used to live.

Shirvani left the college in May for a position as chancellor of the North Dakota Board of Higher Education.

A new family recently moved into his former Turlock home in the 2200 block of Quincy Road.

About 6:30 a.m., a woman was in the back yard when a man dressed all in black, including a black ski mask, emerged from behind the barbecue, according to Sgt. Stephen Webb.

The woman ran inside the house and locked the door, and the burglar followed her.

When he couldn't open the door, the man ran away and the victim called police, Webb said.

Officers searched the area but could not find the intruder.
