Man shot in hip while walking in west Modesto

MODESTO -- A 27-year-old man was shot just before noon Monday while walking at Laurel Avenue and Luinda Way in west Modesto, police said.

A neighbor reported hearing one gunshot, then saw the man lying on the ground screaming, "Somebody come help me!"

The woman told her husband to call 911, and police and medical personnel arrived a short time later.

Sgt. Pat Kimes said the victim was shot in the hip but is expected to survive.

The victim told police he was walking from his house to a friend's house when he was shot but said little else, particularly in the way of suspect information, Kimes said.
