Eighth-grader Emmanuel Perez won the Norman Glick Award at Glick Middle School in Empire. The award is for making a lasting, positive impression on peers, as well as teachers' minds and hearts, said Janet Mikkelsen, Glick Middle School principal.
Five students from Modesto have won $1,000 Burger King Scholars Program scholarships. They are: Dana Fachner, The King's College and Seminary; David Olivares, Modesto Junior College; Justin Bopp, Enochs High School; Rebecca Bopp, Hodges University; and Stephanie Ramirez, Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts.

Tyler Oliveira, 12, of Modesto competed in the Association of Christian Schools International National Spelling Bee last month. The Big Valley Christian School student won at the district and regional levels before advancing to the spell-off in Washington, D.C. Tyler came in 18th out of 43 competitors, felled by the word "asceticism."
The Calaveras County Math Mini-Bowl was held May 31. In the fifth-grade competitions, top scorers were: for the blitz, Gabrielle Tu of Hazel Fischer Elementary in Arnold; for the huddle, Logan Weatherby of Valley Springs Elementary; and for the bomb, Winter Reeves of Rail Road Flat Elementary. In the sixth-grade competitions, top scorers were: for the blitz, Max Stickels of Valley Springs Elementary; for the huddle, Emmary Jones of Avery Middle School; and for the bomb, Ryan Crawford, Avery Middle School.
