LAKE DON PEDRO Kokanee are plentiful, and guide Monte Smith said it's a good time to take kids out trolling for kokes. He said salmon in the 9- to 13-inch range are schooling up and hitting Uncle Larry's spinners behind a Vance's dodger, Dick Nite dodger, or Shasta Tackle Sling Blade. The Kokanee Power tournament attracted 123 fishermen, and most fished the Graveyard and Upper Middle Bay. For bass, Manny Basi at the Bait Barn in Waterford said chatterbaits such as the Z-Man Original in chartreuse/shad or greenpumpkin or Swim Senko in matching colors as a trailer are working. Anglers are tossing chatterbaits up to the banks. The bass are chasing shad in the coves. He also suggested the 3.8 or 4.8 KTech swimbait in rainbow trout fished solo or on jigs. There is a top-water bite in the early mornings or late afternoons with the Lucky Craft Gunfish in chartreuse/shad or Super Spook in Okie Shad. Call: Monte Smith (209) 581-4734; Danny Layne (209) 586-2383; Gary Vella (209) 652-7550; Bait Barn (209) 874-3011
McCLURE RESERVOIR Bass are biting a variety of lures. Diana Mello of A-1 Bait reported good action in Horseshoe Bend with Robo Worms in 082 red or grubs in smoke/black/purple. Manny Basi at the Bait Barn in Waterford said chatterbaits are working (just like those he recommended for Don Pedro). There is a top-water bite early and late on Lucky Craft Gunfish in chartreuse/shad or Super Spook in Okie Shad. Large minnows or live crawdads also are producing. King salmon have been taken at 45 feet with pink Rocky Mountain Tackle Assassin spinners behind a pink dodger. You can find trout up the river arm or in Cottonwood Cove with Needlefish, Wedding Rings tipped with a night crawler or blade/crawler combinations at 20 to 30 feet. Call: A-1 Bait (209) 563-6505; Bub Tosh (209) 404-0053 McSWAIN RESERVOIR Diana Mello of A-1 Bait reported trollers scored limits of rainbows with blade/crawler combos in the upper portion of the lake from the floating restrooms to Gilligan's Island down to 25 feet. Bank action remains good in the D loop campground with chartreuse or rainbow Power Bait and also near the brush pile with chartreuse/garlic glitter Power Bait. Trout have been caught downstream near the Hornitos Bridge on night crawlers and at the PG&E dam below Hornitos with white Power Eggs. A Calaveras Trout Farm plant is expected by the end of the week. NEW MELONES RESERVOIR / TULLOCH RESERVOIR Guide Gary Burns reported the kokanee are getting bigger and anglers are catching limits. "We put one in the box at 16½ inches this week, and we are starting to see more and more fish in the 13- to 15-inch range," he said. He recommends GlitterBug mini hootchies or Market Angler's Bites in pink or orange scented with ginger or garlic shoepeg corn behind a blue or chrome Shasta Tackle Sling Blade at 50 to 80 feet. Melones will host the Central Valley Anglers Russ Faught "Mr. Kokanee" Memorial Tournament June 16. Go to www.centralvalleyanglers.org for information. The rainbows have moved off the banks into deeper water near the main lake. Guides suggest making a long cast with a slip float rig and a bobber stop adjusted from 15 to 25 feet. Melanie Lewis of Glory Hole Sporting Goods advised using lures such as chrome, chrome/blue or gold-colored Kastmasters first thing in the morning. She also recommends floating night crawlers combined with a Berkley Power Egg off the bottom. She said bass in the 12- to 15-inch range are being caught, but they're moving out into deeper water. Top-water lures are effective in the mornings before moving to the bottom with plastics. Catfishing is good on frozen shad, chicken livers, mackerel or a big ball of night crawlers. Crappie are hitting small minnows or minijigs in the submerged willows in Bear and Carson coves. Lewis suggested using a live minnow with a minijig. Call: Glory Hole Sports (209) 736-4333; Monte Smith (209) 581-4734; Danny Layne (209) 586-2383; Sierra Sport Fishing (209) 599-2023
SAN LUIS RESERVOIR / O'NEILL FOREBAY Wind kept most boaters off the main lake last week, but a few boats were able to troll during brief calms near the trash racks, and one boat hooked two stripers on P-Line Predators at 50 feet. Mickey Clements of Coyote Bait in Morgan Hill said pile worms, anchovies or sardines are working for stripers, but they're undersized. Call: Ly's Fishing Goods (408) 629-9644; Coyote Bait & Tackle (408) 463-0711
DELTA/STOCKTON The wind played havoc on the Delta all week. Meanwhile, while striped bass have vacated the area, sturgeon are still biting, especially on the outgoing tide in the Big Cut with grass shrimp. Alan Fong of the Fishermen's Warehouse has been bass fishing in the mornings in 14-Mile Slough before switching to red ear perch with mini-crawlers or mini-jigs along the rip rap and weeds. He landed over 100 of the half-pound sunfish within an hour. Call: Randy Pringle (209) 543-6260; Mark Wilson Sport Fishing (916) 682-1630; Intimidator Sport Fishing (916) 806-3030; Jolly Jay's Guide Service (209) 478-6645
OCEAN
HALF MOON BAY High wind kept the salmon boats in, but Capt. Dennis Baxter of the New Captain Pete put in 15 salmon before the shakerfest began. For the first time, a mass of undersized salmon (22 inches) moved in. They were trolling at 50 fathoms off Pescadero. Tom Mattusch of the Huli Cat also got in on it Sunday, releasing 32 undersized salmon. These fish should be legal by July 1. Rockfishing has been slow in cold water (48 degrees), and anglers are getting only half limits. Sheryl Jimno in Pacifica said anglers have picked up striped bass on anchovies from the pier. Call: Happy Hooker (510) 223-5388; Huck Finn Sport Fishing Center (650) 726-7133; Emeryville Sport Fishing (510) 654-6040; Don Franklin, Soleman(510) 703-4148
MONTEREY/SANTA CRUZ Chris Arcoleo of Chris's Landing reported "beautiful" weather Sunday and the Checkmate ran north to the Soquel Hole where the salmon bite was good. They put three fish in the box right off the bat, then the bite slowed. They finished with six salmon for 12 anglers. The Caroline took 35 fishermen to the local reefs for rockfish and came back with three-quarter limits. Call: Chris' Landing (831) 375-5951; Bayside Marine (831) 475-2173
SAN FRANCISCO BAY The rockfish season opened Friday, but most fishermen are still after salmon. Party boats averaged a salmon per rod Sunday mostly on the Marin coast below Point Reyes. Capt. Bob Wright took the Happy Hooker out for rockfish Sunday and got 22 limits of quality school fish off the Duxbury Reef.
