German Fernandez earned a spot in the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships 1,500-meter race by finishing fourth in the West Region finals Saturday. Fernandez, of Riverbank, had won his heat on Thursday and bettered his time in the finals, but settled for fourth after being “boxed in” among other runners, according to coach Dave Smith. The top five advance to the championships. Fernandez won the NCAA title as a true freshman in 2009, but has been hampered by injuries since.
