Law would make college affordable

May 17, 2012

The state Legislature should pass the Middle Class Scholarship Act. If it indeed is passed, a corporate tax loophole will be closed and the savings will be used to lower student fees.

Students with family incomes less than $150,000 but more than the amount allowed to qualify for financial aid will receive a middle-class scholarship, which will slash fees by two-thirds.

California State University students will save more than $4,000 a year and UC students will save more than $8,169 a year.

To accommodate the rising price of higher education, students are taking out loans. Some students end up graduating with a debt and no idea on how to pay it off. During a time of soaring college tuition, the passage of the Middle Class Scholarship Act is necessary.
