A Turlock man pleaded guilty Monday to six counts of mail fraud for embezzling nearly a half-million dollars from his former employer.

According to the U.S. attorney's office, Mark George Jankowski, 51, took $448,366 from December 2004 to July 2010, when he served as marketing director for Ruiz Foods.

Jankowski created invoices from false sales and marketing vendors to bill Ruiz for supposed services performed, then authorized payment to these false vendors.

The checks were mailed to the vendors to addresses provided by Jankowski or were hand-delivered to him. Jankowski faces a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced Aug. 6.
