MODESTO -- A convenience store clerk was shot during a robbery Wednesday but received only minor injuries because the bullet lodged in his wallet.
Modesto police responded to a call of an armed robbery at the Standiford Minit Mart at about 8 p.m.
Three men went into the store, one of them armed with a gun, and demanded money, according to Officer Scott Nelson of the Modesto Police Department.
While the clerk was collecting money from the cash register the armed suspect fired a round. The clerk then started fighting with the armed suspect who fired another round, Nelson said.
The gun was aimed above the clerks left thigh, and it lodged in the wallet. Nelson said the cash the clerk was carrying helped stop the bullet.
He suffered only a bruise from the impact of the bullet and abrasions to his face he received in the scuffle, Nelson said.
The three suspects left the store and one got into a silver Honda driven by a fourth suspect while the others ran.
The getaway car was stopped by officers near the scene and the driver and a passenger were apprehended, Nelson said.
Richard Westover, 18, and Samuel Leon Luna, 21, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, robbery and conspiracy. Westover, who was driving the car, was also arrested for possession of cocaine.
The other two suspects have not been located. They are described as Latino, approximately 5 foot 7, wearing black sweatshirts and dark colored jeans.
