— A 74-year-old Modesto woman who died in an accident on McHenry Avenue was identified Friday as Dolores Arnett.

Arnett was a passenger in a northbound Dodge Neon that veered off the street just past West Union Avenue and crashed, according to Sgt. Brian Findlen of the Modesto Police Department.

The car hit the curb and collided with a pole, then a tree, in front of the Stop N’ Save market.

Arnett’s daughter, 52-year-old, Cheryl Chaffey was driving the car. Findlen said they're looking into the possibility of whether she suffered “some kind of medical condition prior to the accident.”

Emergency crews arrived and worked on Arnett, but could not save her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chaffey suffered non-life threatening injuries including several broken bones, Findlen said.

Findlen said witness statements don’t indicate another vehicle was involved and that Arnett was driving at or close to the speed limit, which is 45 miles per hour on that stretch of McHenry.

It does not appear that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.

Findlen asks that anyone who witnessed the crash to call Modesto Police at (209) 572-9500 and ask for officer Rodney Garcia, who is in charge of the case. They also can call Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636. Tips can be e-mailed at www.modestopolice.com/CrimeStoppers, or text them to CRIMES (274637) by typing “Tip704” plus a message; tipsters are eligible for a cash reward.
