DREAM JOB
So youre applying for your dream job. Sharon Birkman (www.birkman.com) says you can turn the experience into a nightmare without much effort. Make it your objective to turn off the interviewer.
Heres Birkmans first suggestion: Go in blind. Dont find out a single thing about the company. Ask, So what do you guys do? Make each employer sell the job and company to YOU.
Flatter endlessly, Birkman suggests, tossing in Thats a lovely dress, Mrs. Cleaver. If the interviewer is a man, bore in on his lapel and announce, Thats a handsome lapel pin. Whats it for?
She also advocates demanding things of the employer, leading at all costs. Her key recommendation? Dont wait for the person to bring up compensation. Instead, indicate youre more interested in money than working, learning, advancing your career or being affiliated with the organization. Say, Show me the money.
Make it clear that you care only about your generation, not the two or three others youll encounter when you work on teams or share the break room. Be direct, remarking, Im talkin bout my generation, she advises. Youll save the company money.
When confronted with your dream job, invite it closer. Dont push your interviewer away.
